The Role of the Spleen (Pi) in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Yin Organs Overview by  and

The spleen (pi), of all the organs in traditional Chinese medicine, bears the least resemblance to its Western counterpart. The latter deals primarily with production and destruction of red blood cells and storage of blood.
In traditional Chinese physiology, the spleen plays a central part in the health and vitality of the body, taking a lead role in the assimilation of nutrients and maintenance of physical strength. It turns digested food from the stomach into usable nutrients and qi. Entire schools of medicine were formed around this organ; the premise

was that all aspects of vitality depend on the entire body receiving proper nutrition from the healthy functioning of this essential organ.
Symptoms of imbalance in the spleen include:
  • fatigue
  • lack of appetite,
  • blood sugar imbalances
  • Digestive Disorders
  • muscular atrophy (wasting),
  • indigestion,
  • abdominal fullness,
  • bloating,
  • jaundice,
  • inappropriate bleeding or bruising.
                                                                             Radix Glycyrrhizae (Licorice)

Licorice is a Spleen Tonic according to Chinese Herbology.

  • Tonifies the spleen and augments qi - spleen deficiency w/shortness of breath, fatigue, loose stools (si jun zi tong).
  • Qi and/or blood deficiency w/irregular pluse or palpitations (Zhi Gan Cao Tang).
  • Moistens the lungs and stops cough - heat/cold in the lungs (Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang).
  • Clears heat and toxic fire (raw) - carbuncles, sores, sore throat due to fire toxin (internally or topically).
  • Alleviates pain and stops spasms - abdomen or legs (Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang).
  • Often used to harmonize and/or moderate characteristics of other herbs.
  • Antidote for toxic substances (internally and topically).
